How Men Sell Themselves on Sugar Dating Platforms

When a man joins a sugar dating platform, he isn't simply advertising what he can offer financially. In practice, he is building a presentation of himself: a kind of personal showcase in which resources, personality, experience, lifestyle, and expectations about the relationship all appear combined.

That is exactly what the thesis A Content Analysis of Sugar Dating Websites, by Mia DeSoto, set out to investigate. The author analyzed 50 public male profiles on SeekingArrangement.com to find out which strategies they used to present themselves to potential sugar babies.

The man as someone who has resources

The first element of this presentation is the man as someone who has resources. Profiles allowed users to list occupation, education, net worth, income, and lifestyle. In the sample studied, the men were between 24 and 64 years old, with an average age of 43.3. Most had a college education, and many described themselves as entrepreneurs or self-employed professionals.

But resources weren't necessarily presented in isolation. Many men tried to turn what they had into a broader experience: they talked about travel, education, career, knowledge, professional contacts, and the ability to offer guidance. One profile highlighted his education, his travels, and his experience in companies, startups, and entrepreneurship. Another presented himself as a successful man who could offer mentorship and financial support.

So one way to "sell" your image is to suggest: I'm not just offering resources; I'm offering access to a certain lifestyle and to my experience.

The relationship as emotionally appealing

Another approach is to present the relationship as emotionally appealing. In 34% of the 50 profiles analyzed, some desire for emotional connection, friendship, or companionship appeared. Some men talked about creating memories, traveling together, talking, and developing an intellectual, emotional, or physical connection. In one example, financial benefits were described as a bonus rather than the main reason for the relationship.

No strings and no time to lose

There is, however, a second and quite different strategy. In 18% of profiles, men explicitly sought "no strings attached" or friends with benefits arrangements. In those cases, the advantage on offer was precisely the absence of romantic commitment. One man said he wasn't looking for a soulmate, but for a direct relationship without emotional complications.

A justification related to time also appears. Another 18% of the men stressed that they were extremely busy professionally. For them, a sugar baby could provide company during the little free time they had, without the time and commitments of traditional dating.

Preferences and discretion

On the other hand, they also present themselves as consumers with very specific preferences. Some look for young, attractive, physically fit women who can hold an intelligent conversation. Others specify geographic distance, how often they meet, travel, and the qualities they want in the relationship.

Finally, there is the matter of discretion. Among the 50 profiles, 22% of the men said they were married and looking for another companion; of those, 45% explicitly mentioned the need for discretion.

A showcase of identity

The picture that emerges from the thesis is an interesting one: the man doesn't present himself simply as someone who has money. He turns his resources into a story about who he is and what his company can provide — security, experiences, knowledge, contacts, fun, intimacy, freedom, or a relationship without complications.

The platform itself reinforces this presentation by structuring profiles so that users state their occupation, education, lifestyle, expectations, and the kind of partner they are looking for. The result is a kind of marketplace in which people present not only what they own, but also the identity they want to sell.

It is this combination — resources + personality + experience + lifestyle + relationship model — that, according to the thesis, makes up one of the main ways men present themselves on sugar dating platforms.
